Case Study
Activ-Ox® Foam Clean of Cooling Tower Fill Pack
A major UK manufacturer of cabs, fabrications, assemblies and components used on automotive agricultural and industrial vehicles has taken advantage of a new process developed by Feedwater to maintain the integrity of process cooling plant and comply with HSC Approved Code of Practice & Guidance (L8) for Legionnaires’ Disease: The control of legionella bacteria in water systems.

Background
The finished products are supplied to OEM customers in UK, Europe, North and South America and India. The site includes an extensive detail part manufacturing facility supporting the main build lines and cathodic paint facilities. There are four open evaporative cooling towers located across the site, which cater for compressor cooling, cab paint facility cooling, plus small parts and spot welder cooling.
The site previously used plant operators or members of maintenance team to carry out cleaning and disinfection of these cooling systems during shutdown periods. This approach had the disadvantages of:
1. extended periods of downtime for cooling plant
2. labour requirement for non-core maintenance activities
3. exposure of site personnel to hazardous substances
4. degradation of pack integrity when removing and re-installing tower fill pack
Solution
Activ-Ox® Foam cleaning of cooling tower fill pack is a process recently
developed by Feedwater. It uses a combination of disinfecting and deposit removing agents applied with pressurised air at 4-5 bar to create a foam which is sprayed from a lance onto the surfaces to be cleaned. The liquid to air ratio can be varied to obtain the correct contact time for the degree of fouling. The main benefits are:
- reduced plant downtime
- reduced risk of chemical exposure
- reduced maintenance cost through degradation of pack integrity
This system can also help to ensure that you comply with the L8 recommendation for cleaning of cooling tower packing at least once per year.

A photographic record can be made which can be used to report visual
evidence of how effective the process was which can be produced to satisfy any HSE inspector should the need arise.
